AWARE publishes biographies of artists born between 1664 and 1974. The publication of new biographies is mainly carried out as a part of specific programmes. At the centre of each of these programmes is a research committee or partner institution in charge of selecting the artists who will be published on the site and the authors of the texts. The publications are also dependent on AWARE’s funding. It’s important to note that AWARE's operations depend on funding for the publication of texts, which includes authors' compensation, editorial coordination, translation, proofreading, and image management.
If you would like to point out any errors or suggest corrections concerning an artist biography, research article or any other content, please do not hesitate to contact the AWARE team at [[email protected]].
As AWARE is not the owner or manager of the artists' rights, we can’t provide any kind of authorization for the reproduction of images on the AWARE website. To request the reproduction of an artwork and/or the portrait of an artist, you should contact the artist or their representative (gallery, copyright holder, ADAGP) directly.
The AWARE prizes (Nouveau Regard prize and Outstanding Merit prize) do not operate by direct application. They are awarded to artists nominated by commissioners, who are responsible for presenting and defending the artists' work before a jury of seven leading figures from the art world.
Each year, AWARE appoints four commissioners - professionals such as art historians, critics, and curators - each shortlisting two artists: a mid-career artist and an artist with a career spanning over 40 years. These artists are nominated for the Nouveau Regard Prize and the Outstanding Merit prize, respectively.
If you would like to submit a request for a research collaboration or partnership, please contact the AWARE team at [[email protected]].
However, AWARE is an association whose operations depend on private funding and public subsidies. Unfortunately, AWARE is not able to respond to requests for financial support.
AWARE proposes several scholarships and research and writing residencies. These programmes operate on the basis of open calls for applications and mainly centre on women and nonbinary artists working in the visual arts. We encourage you to keep an eye on the “EVENTS” page on our website as well as our social media profiles to stay informed of any opportunities.
