AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions, is pleased to announce the launch of the comic book L’Histoire de l’art au féminin, published by Casterman BD. The event will take place on Thursday, September 26, at 8 pm at the Le Comptoir des Mots bookstore, in the presence of Camille Morineau, Executive Director of AWARE who wrote the preface to the comic book, along with Marion Augustin and Sara Colaone.
This educational book, accessible to children aged 8 to 12, follows Jo and Ben, two young teens who, during a museum visit, are surprised by the lack of women artists in the exhibitions, despite their frequent representation in men’s artworks. At that moment, Apollo and Artemis, two ancient statues, come to life to reveal the essential and often overlooked role of women artists across centuries and continents.
This visual journey, conceived by Marion Augustin, the successful author of L’Histoire de l’Art en BD, is beautifully illustrated by Sara Colaone, a comic book author and PhD in film history. The book takes us on an immersive adventure through different periods, from classical academies to avant-garde movements, highlighting the genius of women creators who have often been marginalized by history.
Enriched with 13 portraits of women artists written by Sophie Caron and illustrated by Louise Nelson, this comic book stands as a vibrant tribute to the women who have left their mark on art.
