This downloadable educational booklet, intended for middle and high school teachers, is the result of a collaboration initiated in 2023 between AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions and the Académie de Créteil (administrative district of the Ministry of National Education, France). Offering an interpretation of the visual arts curriculum provided by the French Ministry of National Education, this resource aims to support the teaching of a more inclusive and diversified cultural history by highlighting works by women and non-binary artists from around the world.
Developed by a working group composed of teachers, the visual arts inspectorate of the Académie de Créteil, and the AWARE team, this booklet brings together 90 artworks by women and non-binary artists featured in the AWARE index. These works are organized according to the strands of the high school visual arts specialization curriculum. Five works are highlighted for each of the eighteen lines of inquiry of this curriculum. We have paid attention to diversity in geography, chronology, media, and artistic approaches. Open-ended questions related to the works, along with links to additional information on the AWARE website, are intended to facilitate the integration of references to women artists in lesson planning.
Far from being conceived as a model or exhaustive corpus, the proposed constellations aim to open up a horizon of reflection that can take on multiple meanings and give rise to numerous possible ways of making connections.
This booklet is therefore an invitation to teachers to question existing inequalities in art historical narratives and to make use of the AWARE website to design new teaching materials and educational projects. These are meant to unfold in a transdisciplinary and sustainable way, extending beyond the teaching of visual arts.
