— Anna Mark

Hungarian painter and draughtswoman.

After years of training under the direction of Róbert Berény, Anna Mark worked as a set designer for the Budapest Puppet Theatre from 1950 to 1956. She lived in Germany from 1956 to 1959 before moving to Paris. Her most remarkable works are characterized by their use of geometrical shapes, which present a synthesis of constructivism and lyrical abstraction. She began to expand the boundaries of her pictorial expression (silk printing, gouache) as from the late 70s through a series of embossed designs. The fragmentation and refractive effects of the light have interested her since the 80s. It was during this period that she also began to publish theoretical works: Concerto (1980); Genèse (Genesis, 1983); Petit Glossaire (Small Glossary, 1983), with Kamill Major; Heraklit Fragmente (1984); Un dessin pour chaque mois (A drawing for each month, 1995).

Mark has consistently drawn on the pages of her diary every day since the beginning of her career. She creates monochromatic reliefs by using marble powder, sand and artificial resin, with which she accentuates the presence of shadows. Many of her works are featured in the public space: Alfombra (Mobilier-National, Paris 1973); Décoration (Collège Raspail, Rosny-sous-Bois 1978 and Collège Paul-Langevin, Saint-Ouen 1978); Ministry of Culture of the Land of Lower Saxony (Hanover 1981, 1987).
