Macedonian painter and fashion stylist.
“Life is art, art is life.” This is the motto of Jana Maneva-Čuposka, who grew up in the studio of her father, Kole Manev (b. 1941), a renowned painter; from an early age she knew that art would be central to her life. After graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje, she moved to Prague after a stay in Paris and studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design. She finished her studies with a master’s in design and art from the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts of Skopje. J. Maneva-Čuposka currently teaches in the Faculty for Art and Design of the European University of Skopje. In just a few years, she had a dozen solo exhibitions in her hometown, in Paris, Prague and New York, and she participated in more than forty group exhibitions. Drawing has always been a true challenge for her. Starting from a point, it emerges under her hand forming a net made up of countless straight, curved lines, thin and thick. It is from there that the figures or characters emerge, always linked together by a story. The technique she uses requires a perfect precision of the hand.
The world of J. Maneva-Čuposka is halfway between fantasy and reality. Her painting is figurative. In recent years she has introduced digital techniques to her work. Her favourite painters, apart from her father, are Max Ernst, Max Beckmann, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Pablo Picasso and Otto Dix. She is also interested in fashion. After working for the fashion houses Orka and Magnolia, she became one of the founders of the Fashion Designers Association of Macedonia. The fashion shows she organises are veritable displays of sound and light and her pieces are worn by the musical stars of her country. She also makes costumes for theatre and cinema and is interested in photography. She is a member of the Painters Association of Macedonia.
