Modern Women, curated by Camille Morineau and AWARE, is devoted to art by women and spans 1880-1980, from first-wave feminism to the beginnings of feminist art in the 1970s. Taking its name from MoMA’s groundbreaking 2010 publication, the section breaks with the idea of modernism as single, linear, progressive, and masculine. Modern Women present modernities, reframing the modern by encompassing a century of creation through a multitude of points of view, and various media. The works range from the non-political to the overtly activist, revealing the specificity of each practice. The stands dialogue with one another, figurative with abstract, or abstract with feminist. In keeping with AWARE’s goals, presenting these artists together breaks down traditional hierarchies and demonstrates how essential women were to writing the story of modernisms.
