AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions is setting up a new residency programme at the Villa Vassilieff in Paris for research on women and non-binary photographers and video artists.

The Villa Vassilieff

In 2021, AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions moved into the Villa Vassilieff, previously artist Marie Vassilieff’s studio, canteen, and a space for exchange for the 20th century avant-garde. This new and symbolic space is comprised of two distinct areas:

· A main area where AWARE’s offices, a documentation centre, as well as an education centre equipped with a projection room and a listening room are located.
· A separate studio space, allowing for the implementation of research and writing programmes for curators and art historians.

General conditions of the residency

Length of the residency: 3 months (from February 1, 2023, to April 30, 2023)

Accommodation: The resident will have an independent living and working studio of 44m² (473 ft²) within the Villa Vassilieff. The resident will also have access to AWARE’s resource and information centre, which contains nearly 3,000 references on women artists (monographs, critical essays, exhibition catalogues, etc.).

Financial conditions: Payment of a round trip ticket between the place of residence and Paris, living allowance of 900 €/month, i.e., 2,700 € for the entire residency.

Support offered by AWARE: The AWARE team will make available its expertise and its institutional, artistic and academic networks. (Museums, galleries, professionals, research centres, archives).

During the residency, the resident will be invited to host a meeting at the Villa Vassilieff (conference/round table/masterclass) to present their research work. At the end of the residency, they will be invited to write a research article which will be published on the AWARE website.

Applications

· A research proposal in English or French (focusing on one or several women and/or non-binary photographers and video artists),

· A short letter of motivation, explaining your reasons for working at the Villa Vassilieff in Paris.

· A CV.

Interviews with the pre-selected candidates will take place between the end of November and the beginning of December. The selection committee will be composed of:

· Simon Baker, director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP)

· Aliocha Imhoff and Kantuta Quirós, lecturers at Paris I & Paris VIII Universities, filmmakers, art theorists, curators, founders of the platform le peuple qui manque

· Rasha Salti, writer, curator, and programmer in the visual arts and film

· A representative of AWARE
