To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the AWARE association in 2024 and to anticipate the 10th anniversary of the AWARE Prize in 2026, AWARE partners with the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne to present a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the recipients of the AWARE Outstanding Merit Prize.
Since their creation in 2016, the AWARE Prizes have played an essential role in promoting and recognising women and non-binary artists of the French art scene. The Outstanding Merit Prize, awarded to artists with a career spanning more than 40 years, has been awarded to eleven artists: Esther Ferrer (laureate in 2016), Judit Reigl (2017), Vera Molnár and Nil Yalter (joint laureates in 2018), Jacqueline de Jong (2019), Marie Orensanz (2020), Barbara Chase-Riboud (2021), Laura Lamiel (2022), Rose Lowder (2023), Katerina Thomadaki for her collaborative work with Maria Klonaris (2024) and most recently Tsuneko Taniuchi in 2025.
Calling upon individual or collective lives and careers trajectories, this exhibition celebrates the singular journeys of these artists. Nourished by the specificity of their international experiences, they have greatly enriched the French art scene. Their art, often socially engaged, defies the canonical reading of post-war art and imposes the writing of a feminist and decentred art history. In retrospect, the AWARE Prize acknowledges the contributions made by women artists to the interculturality of the French art scene and the plural trajectories that run through it.
The exhibition showcases the paths of women artists who have been at the heart of the French scene. It invites the public to delve into the resonances between their works, born of the singular approaches of each of the artists presented.
