Serbian mixed media artist.
Milica Tomić has developed a politically and socially-minded body of work that uses a variety of mediums, such as video, photography, and sound. She calls these performance pieces, which she creates with Grupa Spomenik (the Monument Group), “discussions”. She focuses on political violence and issues linked to nationality and identity – especially in present-day Serbia – and is interested in the ways in which the media shapes images and opinions. Her latest works examine the subject of war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, as well as that of victims of international terrorism.
Her videos and photo series often take the form of documentation of the pieces in which the artist herself performs: I Am Milica Tomić (1999); Belgrade Remembers (2001); One Day, Instead of One Night, a Burst of Machine-Gun Fire Will Flash (2009). Her work has been shown at the São Paulo Biennale in 1998 and Sydney Biennale in 2006. M. Tomić also represented Serbia at the Venice Biennale in 2003. A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Belgrade Contemporary Art Museum in 2010.
