AWARE and Union Quoi? International·e, an artists collective associated with the Villa Vassilieff’s research center and library, are pleased to invite you to the 2023 – 2024 academic year book club.
For this second session, conceived and led by Yeongseo Jee, we invite you to read excerpts from letters, which enable us to transcend the impossibility of being physically, spatially and temporally in the presence of our loved ones. These written exchanges convert this absence into expressions of love for the recipients.
This session will feature letters from artists who, as whole individuals, have passed on their memories, wishes and lives as mothers and daughters, lovers, brothers and sisters, beyond the ties of blood. We will propose excerpts from the following works:
• AN ARCHIVE OF LOVE
Photographs by Attar Abbas, Raymond Depardon, Rachid Ouettassi …, Texts by Dalia Al-Dujaili, Traduction par Mourad Nusair, Middle East Archive, 2023
• ANGELWINGS: CONTEMPORARY QUEER FICTION FROM TAIWAN

• Frida Kahlo par Frida Khalo : lettres 1922-1954
Frida Kahlo, Editions Points, 2009
•Mon secret
Niki de Saint Phalle, les éditions des femmes-Antoinette Fouque et Le Rayon Blanc, 2023 [1994]
• Unposted letters: correspondence, diaries, drawings, documents, 1940-1942
Franciszka Themerson et Stefan Themerson, Gaberbocchus & De Harmonie, 2013
The reading will take the form of two ASMR1 readings. Following the first, we will sift through the particles left in our hearts and write a letter around the subject of love. These will then be read during a second ASMR reading. In this way, we can experience together the intimacy of the letters as a deeper auditory perception. It will allow us to filter out the normative conceptions of love (heterosexual, patriarchal, and Western) to connect ourselves with our own feelings, our own values of love.
The reading will take place in French and English. Because of the workshop’s sensory approach, an understanding of either language is sufficient.
