Interview with Barbara Chase-Riboud

Introduction

In September 2024, the eighth publication of the AWARE Outstanding Merit Prize series devoted to Barbara Chase-Riboud, recipient of the 2021 edition of the prize, will be available in bookstores. The interview was conducted by Guillaume Désanges, exhibition curator, art critic, and president of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

“I would call it simply resistance… There is a kind of formidable resistance to being categorized, and I would do anything to resist being put into a stereotypic situation.”

The collection of interviews was launched in partnership with Manuella Éditions, with the goal of giving visibility and a voice to artists. The Outstanding Merit prize honors artists with over 40 years of career, and these interviews allow us to acknowledge their work and journey. Since November 2019, the collection has featured interviews with Nil Yalter  (recipient in 2018), Jacqueline de Jong (recipient in 2019), Judit Reigl (recipient in 2017), Esther Ferrer (recipient in 2016), Vera Molnár (recipient in 2018), and Marie Orensanz (recipient in 2020). The interview with Laura Lamiel (recipient in 2022) will also be released in September 2024.
