Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987) was a Norwegian artist who was little known in France, even though she spent most of her life here.

Perhaps because she was married twice to the artist Hans Hartung, it was hard for her to impose herself as a woman in art circles.

Yet Anna-Eva Bergman’s work is as just as masterly as her husband’s. It took root in a metaphysical conception of the landscape that was deeply influenced by Scandinavian mythology. Pure lines laid on large expanses of colours suggest the essence of a form illuminated by gold and silver leaf, capturing the light and reflecting it like a mirror. With a minimalist layout—mountains, horizon and sea are at times reduced to a single line—and simple surfaces, the artist thus managed to arouse the aesthetic emotion of the wild but soothing immensity of Scandinavian landscapes.

In Paris, the galerie Jérôme Poggi is showing pictures from the 1970s and 1980s on the theme of the horizon, produced in Antibes, where the artist settled in 1973 with Hans Hartung, as well as a sublime series of engravings on wood made between 1974 and 1976.

A retrospective exhibition of her oeuvre will be held next year in Brittany, at the Domaine de Kerguéhennec. So we will be talking about Anna-Eva Bergman again.

At galerie Jérôme Poggi, Paris, from 28 May to 23 July 2016.
